Cynosure FC Petitions NFF Over 'Unjust' Match-Fixing Sanctions

Cynosure Football Club of Abakaliki has formally petitioned the Appeals Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to overturn sanctions imposed on the club following an alleged case of match-fixing involving Liberty FC and E-World during the NLO playoffs at the Calabar Centre. The NLO Secretariat fined Cynosure FC ₦500,000 and suspended its chairman for six months, accusing the club of making false allegations of match-fixing that were deemed damaging to Nigerian football's reputation.

Cynosure FC raised concerns over the legitimacy of the match, questioning how a team that had fulfilled its previous six matches suddenly fielded only seven players in a critical fixture without any reasonable explanation. They also challenged the claim that a change in match time led to player absences, arguing that all parties were duly informed in advance.

In their statement, Cynosure FC criticised the NLO Disciplinary Committee's decision, calling it a "miscarriage of justice," and urged the NFF Appeals Committee to review the evidence and ensure justice is served. The club expressed fear that the harsh penalties set a dangerous precedent, potentially discouraging future whistleblowing on match integrity issues.

Editorial

Cynosure FC’s bold decision to petition the NFF over the match-fixing sanctions is a critical stand for transparency and integrity in Nigerian football. Accusations of match-fixing are serious and, if unsubstantiated, can harm the sport's image. However, the concerns raised by Cynosure FC about Liberty FC and E-World's matchday conduct highlight the need for thorough investigations to maintain fairness.

We believe that the NFF Appeals Committee has a duty to address these claims with utmost diligence. The idea that a team could field only seven players in a decisive match, citing scheduling conflicts, warrants deeper scrutiny.
